What's It Like In A Small Publishing House?

What's It Like In A Small Publishing House?

I have an idea of what I want to write today. I just don't know how to start it. I bet I've thought of a dozen opening statements but none really fit. I'm not sure why other then the fact I don't want it to be misunderstood. The last few weeks have been a whirl wind and I don't see any signs of it slowing down; actually I see it gaining speed. I know I told you that I would share as much as I possibly could of my publishing experience and I am.

To be honest the experience has not been what I expected. I don't really know what my expectations are but I know that, so far, this doesn't match my initial thoughts. Being a part of MuseItUp Publishing is far better than I could hope for. Of course I'm not neck deep in revisions from the editor at this time so that might have an impact on my opinion - I doubt it though. What is it like? The first day, after I returned my signed contract, I received a list of forums to join. In these forums I have the opportunity to chat with other Muse others and this has proven to be of great value. It really does have that community/family feel to it. I've spent that last week or so browsing around the forums to get a better feel for them. Meeting the other authors, editors and the publisher in these forums is completely different from what we've been told. I originally thought it was just you and the editor with no connection with anyone else. I'm really happy this is not true with the Muse.

What about the book? What's happening with the book? I imagine that, right about now, it is covered with red ink. I picture a bucket of red paint being poured out on top of it. I'm not sure when I will receive the first round of revisions but when I do I plan to share the bloody details with you. I have been warned that the editors are very good which means they take no prisoners when it comes to editing a manuscript. I, for one, wouldn't have it any other way. I want my novel to shine like the sun when it is released.

Since I'm not working on my book what am I doing? I'm doing the exact same thing I did in the past - write and promote. I'm well underway writing the first draft of the sequel for the first novel. Writing a sequel is not easy and I plan to write an article about that soon. I have a year before my book is released so I figured I will start getting the word out about it right now. To start, I developed a new site for the novel and subsequent novels. Here is the link if you would like to check it out - http://www.bloodchronicle.blogspot.com/. I appreciate any feedback you would like to share. That site is a work in progress but it is a start.

I will leave you with this thought. Don't be afraid to pursue the small or medium size publishers. They offer many of the same things the large publishing houses do but with a family feel. That is the biggest surprise I have found to date and once you get involved in a house like that you really feel good about your decision. It is often said that writing is a solitary existence. I didn't agree with that when I started the New Author and I really don't agree with it now that I've seen what a small publishing house has to offer.
